All gasolines are not the same. While the majority of gasolines on the market today contain the minimum amount of cleaning agents required by government standards, some automotive manufacturers say that isn’t enough.

Four leading automakers, including BMW, General Motors, Honda, and Toyota, were so concerned with fuel quality they teamed up to create the “TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline” standard. The TOP TIER standard surpasses the minimum requirements for gasoline detergent additives set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); and in order for a gasoline brand to promote TOP TIER status, all gasolines sold by each brand must meet the TOP TIER standard.

So, what does this mean for you and your engine? TOP TIER gasolines provide better protection against the build-up of carbon deposits than low-quality gasolines. Additionally, the TOP TIER standard is designed to protect engines from the future build-up of carbon deposits. According to engine manufacturers, clean engines can help provide optimal performance and reduce emissions.

Shell Regular, Shell Plus, and Shell V-Power gasolines go above this standard. All Shell gasolines contain more than two times the amount of cleaning agents required by the EPA while Shell V-Power goes even further. It has more than five times the minimum amount of cleaning agents required by government standards and twice the cleaning agents required by the TOP TIER standard. Shell V-Power is specifically formulated to actively clean your engine as you drive giving it the ability to remove deposits that have already built up on intake valves and fuel injectors.

Shell has been developing quality fuels for more than 100 years and the new TOP TIER standards reinforce the importance of buying high-quality fuels with additional cleaning power.
