Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil Chevrolet, is picking up 2010 where he left off in 2009. Harvick finished the 2009 season with two top-five finishes in the final three races, and this year is having one of the best seasons of any driver in the Cup Series. Following his win of the Budweiser Shootout for the second year in a row, Kevin finished in the top 10 at the Daytona 500 after running up front throughout the race. Since then he has been on fire, including finishing a close second at both the Auto Club Speedway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway
Next up is Texas Motor Speedway on April 18. Five of the last seven Sprint Cup Series races at the track have had a margin of victory under one second, which can be partially attributed to the fact that the asphalt at Texas Motor Speedway has good grip that helps cars maintain a fast pace throughout the race. Harvick will also be busy off the track giving away Shell Gift Cards Thursday night during Fandago, a fan event with the drivers for Texas Motor Speedway season ticket holders.
The legendary Talladega Superspeedway finishes out the month on April 25. At 2.66 miles, Talladega is the longest track on the Cup Series schedule, and is known within the sport as the “wild card” track due to its unpredictability and penchant for producing large wrecks. The league mandates the use of restrictor plates, which limits a car’s motor power output, to help reduce speeds at Talladega. The result is closer racing between cars, which means that when cars do collide it can end up turning into a multi-car crash very quickly.
Harvick has finished every race he has ever run at both the Texas Motor Speedway and Talladega racetracks, and has 13 career top-10 finishes between them. Texas Motor Speedway is the sixth-best stop on the circuit for Harvick, who has an average finish of 13.3 at the track. At Talladega, Harvick has led at least one lap in 11 of 18 starts. Expect to see a good race and for Harvick to continue riding his strong momentum.
This year is Harvick’s 10th season of competition in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and fourth season driving the No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil Chevrolet. During the last decade, the Bakersfield, California native has earned 12 career Sprint Cup wins, including the 2007 Daytona 500 and Sprint All-Star Race, and the 2009 and 2010 Budweiser Shootouts. He also ranks second behind Mark Martin for all-time Nationwide Series wins.
